Moving on From ANZSCO

Updated: Nov 1

ANZSCO is the occupation classification system used by INZ to determine whether an applicant is suitable for the position they hold for a visa/residence - for example, a mechanic, who, under ANZSCO, would be classified as level 3 (medium skilled) - requiring either suitable qualification or 3 years work experience.

Statistics New Zealand is set to launch a new classification system known as the National Occupation List (NOL), with the first version scheduled for release on November 20 this year.

This announcement was made jointly by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Statistics New Zealand (ANZSCO), following a consultation period that revealed strong support for distinct systems, reflecting the significant changes in our respective labour markets

For further information on the new classification system, please visit the Stats NZ website.

It is important to note however that while the NOL is being released in November, due to the amount of work it will take to swap over, INZ will still be using ANZSCO through the beginning of 2025, when more updates will be provided.
